How to Prime VariFlame® Adapters for the ENDURA™
Posted by CVA on Sep 2nd 2025
The VariFlame® ignition system is a key part of the ENDURA™ muzzleloader’s performance, allowing shooters to use reliable Large Rifle Primers for consistent ignition. Properly priming these adapters is essential for safety, reliability, and long-range accuracy. In this guide, we’ll walk through the exact priming process as outlined in the ENDURA owner’s manual, along with extra tips to make the process easier and more consistent for both hunters and target shooters.
VARIFLAME® ADAPTERS AND HOW TO PRIME THEM
Tools for loading Large Rifle Primers into the VariFlame Adapters are included with your Endura rifle. These tools provide a simple and inexpensive way to install, remove, and reinstall Large Rifle Primers into the reusable VariFlame Adapters. An alternative method is to use a reloading press for this process using a shell holder sized for the .22 Hornet.
- Always wear eye protection while loading VariFlame Adapters, as primers may explode if too much force is used in installation.
- If the VariFlame Adapter has been previously used, stand it upright in the Base Tool and use the provided punch to remove the fired primer.
- Turn the empty VariFlame Adapter over and insert it into the well of the Base Tool.
- Place the Primer Guide Tool over the Base Tool.
- Slide a Large Rifle Primer, open side down, across the top of the Primer Guide Tool until it drops into the hole of the Primer Guide Tool.
- Insert the stem of the Primer Seating Tool into the hole.
- Gently tap the top of the Primer Seating Tool with a small plastic head hammer until the Primer Seating Tool is flush with the top surface of the Primer Guide Tool.
Note: There are several brands and types of Large Rifle Primers. CVA recommends the “standard” primers over the “magnum” primers. For the most consistent accuracy results, the same quality brand of Large Rifle Primers should always be used.
Best Practices for ENDURA™ VariFlame® Adapter Setup
The VariFlame Adapter system gives you the reliability of a centerfire primer in a reusable stainless-steel housing. Using the tools included with your ENDURA rifle ensures that primers are seated consistently, which directly impacts ignition reliability and shot-to-shot accuracy.
While a standard reloading press with a .22 Hornet shell holder can also prime VariFlame Adapters, most hunters prefer the included manual tools for their simplicity and portability in the field. Always follow the eye protection recommendation when handling primers and VariFlame adaptors.
Consistency is key
Just as with powder measurement, using the same Large Rifle Primer brand and type for all of your loads will minimize velocity variation and help you maintain tight groupings. CVA’s recommendation of “standard” primers over “magnum” primers is based on extensive testing for optimal burn characteristics in the ENDURA platform.
Hunters often store pre-primed VariFlame Adapters in the ENDURA’s built-in floorplate storage so they’re ready for fast reloads during a hunt. This feature helps reduce movement, noise, and the need to handle loose primers in cold or wet conditions.
FInal Thoughts: Variflame Ignition
The VariFlame Adapter system gives the ENDURA™ a significant edge within modern muzzleloaders. By incorporating these steps into your overall muzzleloader loading routine, this will help you get the most performance out of your rifle, whether you’re chasing big game at extended distances or dialing in tight groups at the range.
